Forested peatlands and forest wetland areas provide a large variety of ecosystem services and support biodiversity. Thus, particularly in the implementation of national strategies to mitigate climate change and enhance biodiversity, these areas are increasingly becoming the focus of management action. Consequently, they require inclusive forest management plans to guarantee the provision of all services now, but also in the future. One important element to be considered is the provision of timber and thus the assignment of best suitable harvesting methods.
In a decision-making framework aimed at identifying the optimal harvesting system, which is needed for setting up wholesome management plans, it therefore makes sense to include economic aspects.
In this study, we present a harvesting-cost sensitivity analysis for selected harvesting-systems, designed for peat- or wetland harvesting operations. The results allow a direct comparison of multiple cost-effects of productivity and machine-cost-calculation parameters, helping to identify a suitable portfolio of alternative harvesting options and to reveal their optimization potential.
