This research investigated the resilience of European forest value chains (FVCs) under increasing climate, market, and operation-related disturbances, focusing on how innovation and management practices enable adaptive and sustainable forestry systems. Resilience was defined as the capacity of FVCs to absorb shocks, adapt operations, and maintain core production and ecosystem functions.
A mixed-methods approach combined bibliometric and qualitative analyses of forest bioeconomy innovation with quantitative assessments using an Operational Resilience Framework across five European case studies (Czech Republic, Croatia, Germany, Finland, and Spain). A complementary local-level economic analysis examined operational and market drivers of resilience, supported by stakeholder perspectives.
Results indicate that while technological and mechanisation-based innovations improve short-term system stability, long-term resilience depends on proactive management, diversified processing and logistics capacity, coordinated actor networks, and ecosystem-based strategies. The findings highlight the need to integrate technological solutions with adaptive governance and system-level innovation to strengthen resilient forest value chains, supporting a sustainable forest-based bioeconomy transition relevant to FORMEC 2026 in Prague.
