Stump grinders have long been used to remove stumps after trees have been felled. These machines are particularly useful in hard-to-reach areas, such as urban areas, where it is important to remove the stump quickly without damaging the immediate surroundings. When using stump grinders, it is important to correctly determine the efficiency of this process due to the high labor costs. The efficiency of stump grinding can be presented in various ways. In forest areas, grinding efficiency is defined as the number of stumps ground per area (stumps · ha-1) or the number of stumps ground per hour (stumps · h-1). The term “area milling efficiency” (ha· h-1) with stumps per hour is also used, which is widely used, for example, in the case of milling areas after fast-growing plants. For urban areas, efficiency is usually defined as the number of stumps per working day (stumps · day-1). In this case, the milling capacity is influenced by many factors related to the fact that stump milling in cities is technically and organizationally complex, which is related to the specific nature of the workplace and the limited number of machines that perform this work. It is also important to note that during stump grinding, soil is ground along with the wood, which complicates the analysis when determining productivity. There is little information in the literature on the analysis of the productivity of stump grinders operating in cities. This paper presents an analysis of the productivity of stump grinders operating in the city. The paper presents an analysis of the performance of the Bandit Industries, Inc. model 2550 stump grinder, based on a 3-day chronometer study of the machine's operation while grinding 23 tree stumps in Krakow, a large city in Poland. An analysis of the main factors affecting the time and efficiency of grinding was also performed, taking into account, among other things, the volume of the ground cavity, stump parameters, wood species, and soil moisture. The relationship between work efficiency and the root content in the ground mass was determined. As shown, the operational efficiency of the grinder was 2.88 m³/h, while on a working day it was low at 0.73 m³/h, which was directly related to the activities necessary to perform grinding in the city.
