Description

This research is carried out within the national project Tech4You – Technologies for climate change adaptation and quality of life improvement, funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. Against a global backdrop of growing attention to illegal timber sourcing and the need for clearer information on wood logistics, movement, and marketing, the study examines a blockchain-based electronic traceability system designed to increase transparency and safety across the wood production and processing chain. The proposed solution uses a decentralized, distributed ledger, made available to all stakeholders via a secure digital platform, to record, access, and share validated information on timber origin and every processing stage—from tree harvesting to sawmill operations. Thanks to the immutability and visibility of recorded transactions, blockchain can reinforce trust among actors (producers, processors, and end users) while limiting fraud risks such as document manipulation or material substitution. Beyond transparency, the system can support sustainability by improving monitoring of forest resources and enabling verification that timber comes from responsibly managed sources. Overall, the study shows how digital traceability frameworks can strengthen accountability and sustainability in the wood sector, while reducing the time and costs typically associated with manual inspections and conventional certification procedures.
